Paul Schrader's poignant and powerful look at one man's legacy, blended with some of Richard Gere's best work, makes OH, CANADA one of the year's biggest surprises.
In Paul Schrader’s OH, CANADA, Richard Gere (reuniting with Schrader 44 years after AMERICAN GIGOLO) plays Leonard Fife, who left the U.S. for Canada as a young man during the Vietnam war draft – in a casting masterstroke, Jacob Elordi plays the young, charming Fife. From there, Fife went on to become an acclaimed documentary filmmaker in Montreal. Now, riddled with illness and palliative medicine, he allows a former film student (Michael Imperioli) to interview him. Uma Thurman, playing Fife’s watchful wife Emma, stands guard to protect her husband’s legacy. But as Fife’s memories pour out to the camera and come to life in flashbacks, the great man’s official story fractures. It’s a fascinating match of director and actor, in which both seem to be trying to exorcize the demons of aging through art.Oh, Canada showing at: December 21, 7:30 pm
